read less Posted: 05 May 2010 04:26 PM PDT This extension is a replacement for the default read-more plugin. - Cut off article text after a pre-defined number of characters. - Formatting is retained, without breaking XHTML compliance. - Orphan protection: if the remainder text is less than some configurable number of characters, no text will be cut off. - All links from the cut-off text can be removed, or any other HTML tag that is provided. - Configurable to work on the front page, on a blog page, and/or (for guests) on all pages. - Specific components where this plugin may and may not work on can be specified. - Configurable so that only logged in members can access the full article. - The article text itself is never changed. Disabling the plugin fully restores the old situation. - No author needs to insert any tag. - Choose whether the first image should be displayed in the cut off text. That image can be easily styled, resized and serve as an optional link to teh full article. - Multi-byte languages are supported. After installation, don't forget to configure it to your liking, and to enable the plugin. The tooltips will provide a full explanation of all the options' meaning and their effect. This extension was not meant to be yet another read-more replacement. I originally contacted Space Zone (SZ4H), the owner of the then-excellent cut-off extension, requesting some enhancements - now already more than half a year ago. His reply was kind, regretting the fact time wasn't available, and inviting me to help a hand. Eventually I created a project on joomlacode.org, and kept him up to date with all my intentions, and give him all proposals and accomplishments. When the updated extension was nearly finished, I invited him for a test drive. I invited him again for a test drive. And again. And a fourth time. Each time he replied, informing me that time was currently not available, but promising me to have a look at it in the coming days. Now, after waiting several months without receiving any further message, I now release my adapted code as a new extension. I'm sorry SZ4H, but I don't want to wait any longer. There are a lot of enhancements and features not found in the 'old', nor in competing extensions, and I feel the new version is mature enough for a broader audience; broader than just my own site, that is. The extension is free for use, and released under a GPL3 license. Enjoy!
